Organized annually by the School of Humanities and Social Science at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, the Creative Humanities Fest is a signature event to showcase the talents of its staff and students, as well as the creative orientations in its educational programmes. This year, the Creative Humanities Fest will be scheduled from 18 March 2025 to 25 March 2025. Throughout the week, you can enjoy a variety of activities, including movie screenings, music performances, drama shows, seminars, public lectures, exhibitions, and creative arts workshops.

Opening Ceremony

Chinese Lion Dance Performance
Relish the show of the Chinese Lion Dance, along with the rhythmic sounds of drums, gongs, cymbals, and other traditional Chinese instruments. The costumes used during a performance are colored and very nicely patterned to express liveliness and courage.
The movements of the lion are vividly performed in skillful choreography-jumping and spinning to bring the lion to life. Rich historical and cultural implications are involved with this dance, symbolizing good luck and prosperity, making it a cherished tradition in celebrations. We would like to share this energetic moment of excitement and fun with you.

Spanish Style Dance Performance
Flamenco dance is a vibrant art form that embodies deep emotion and passion. Its rhythm is propelled by the sounds of clapping, guitar, and singing, while common props include scarves, fans, and long skirts.
Clásico Español is a Spanish dance genre that blends flamenco,ballet, and traditional Spanish music. Dancers use castanets (castañuelas) to add percussive accents to their movements. This style emphasizes elegant lines, controlled footwork, and stylized arm movements,often set to the music of Spanish classical composers such as Albéniz and Granados. The dances are choreographed by Clara Ramona and Rochelle Yang.
公開講座 : 2024巴黎奧運開幕式所隱含的文化元素與人文信息

2024年巴黎奧運的開幕式,引入了許多別開生面的想法,大大顛覆了人們對大型賽事開幕式的印象。開幕式的創作團隊,通過各種奇思妙想,讓開幕式得以順利在比賽場館外進行,同時還善用塞納河兩岸的景觀,讓開幕式變成了一場教人目不暇給的嘉年華。創作團隊的創意和精心構思並不只限於此。製作團隊在整個開幕式裡,注入了不少法國引以自豪的藝術、文化元素,而有別於傳統開幕式的表現手法,巴黎奧運開幕式在展示這些法國文化成就時,採用了相對婉轉和暗示等手法,只讓識者去解讀和發現箇中種種驚喜。講者將通過法國文學文化,影視作品以及創意產業,來為聽眾剖析2024巴黎奧運開幕式的各種文化細節,探索它所隱含的人文信息和價值觀。

Jamming Heritage Music Performance
Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm
Venue: 3/F, Podium, M Building, HSUHK

A music performance pays respect to Nanyin, a Cantonese song-art that combines speaking and singing. It was popular around the Pearl River Delta. Today, the performers recreate the “soundscape” of one famous song of Nanyin – “Autumn Regrets of a Traveler” – through guzheng and rock music, making the variations of the music in both traditional and innovative way.
Drama Therapy Experiential Workshop
Time: 2:00pm-3:30pm

This workshop is designed to provide participants with an introduction to drama therapy, emphasizing hands-on experience with drama activities while also delving into the psychological principles and theories that underpin this therapeutic approach. Participants will engage in interactive exercises that illustrate how drama can be used as a powerful tool for emotional expression, healing, and personal development.
AR Animation & Sun Print Art Workshop
Time: 3:00pm-5:00pm

Sun Print Workshop: Make your Art in 15 mins
Photographic process called sun print (cyanotype), which is invented in the UK in the mid-19th century. This workshop will be held by artist Max Chan. Come and create your own artwork with ancient techniques!

The AR Animation Workshop
Invites participants to unleash their creativity by drawing their inspired characters. Guided by instructors Paul Chan and Rochelle Yang, attendees will begin by sketching unique designs, bringing their imaginations to life.

Public Lecture : Fashion as Culture and Performing Arts

Professor Karen Ka-yin Chan, JP, is a fashion designer, as well as the Executive Director of German Pool, an electric appliance name brand in Hong Kong.
Her Sparkle Collection is internationally noted for blending Chinese and international elements in Cheongsam design.
She holds fashion shows annually in Paris, New York, London, Milan, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
She is an Adjunct Professor of the School of Humanities and Social Science at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. In her lecture “Fashion as Culture and Performing Arts”, she will give examples to illustrate her ideas of design as manifestation of culture and art. She will show images and videos to contextualize fashion as an art of body performance.

Youth Matters in a Hong Kong Movie

The mental health issues of students in Hong Kong have drawn significant attention and sparked discussions in recent years. This is a matter of great importance to parents, teachers, authorities, and the students themselves. 《年少日記》Time Still Turns the Pages (2023) is a Hong Kong drama movie directed by Nick Cheuk that responds to this issue. For this event, we are delighted to welcome Nick Cheuk to join our PPE teachers in a discussion, exploring the philosophical questions surrounding education and the social responsibilities of artistic creation.
Music Performance: Voices of the Silver Screen

The Year of Hans Christian Andersen: Creative Writing, Art Exhibition, & Video Story-telling Competitions Award Presentation Ceremony

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the passing of Hans Christian Andersen (2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875), renowned for his fairy tales such as The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, and The Little Match Girl, the Department of English of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong is launching a series of creative competitions, including the short story writing competition, poetry writing competition, art illustration competition, and video storytelling competition.
Selected finalists are invited to participate in the final Q & A session, followed by an Award Presentation Ceremony, at the School of Humanities & Social Science (SHSS) Creative Humanities Fest, scheduled for the morning of 22nd March 2025.
The whole event is open not only to the participants, but also to their teachers, parents, families, and peers, who are welcome to celebrate the triumphant moments with the winners, and join the lunch seminar on H.C. Andersen and paper cutting workshop on the day of the event!

The Year of Hans Christian Andersen: Lunch Seminar

Join Professor Tam, Dr. Miriam Lau from Hong Kong Baptist University, and Dr. Anna Tso for an engaging lunch seminar on March 22, 2025, from 12:30pm to 1:30 pm at CR103. The session will be divided into three parts. Professor Tam will explore “Andersen’s legacy,” offering a unique perspective on the enduring influence of the renowned author. Dr. Miriam Lau will compare “Andersen’s fairytales in the children’s books of mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan,” shedding light on the adaptation of Andersen’s works in the Chinese context.
Dr. Anna Tso will lead “Rereading Andersen in 2025: The making of a radio program on Andersen,” which offers a contemporary perspective on Andersen’s tales and the innovative process of creating a radio program dedicated to his legacy, with additional insights from invited colleagues. Don’t miss this enlightening event for fresh perspectives and lively discussions on the enduring relevance of Andersen’s fairytales and legacy.

Life and Death: Movie Sharing and Discussion
Time: 6:00pm-7:30pm

The movie “Along with the Gods” (《與神同行》) will be featured in the activity. Following the screening, there will be a post-viewing analysis and discussion. (Due to copyright issues, only selected video clips will be shared.) The main focus of the analysis and discussion will be on perspectives of life and death within Korean culture. In relation to the core value of our theme “意yi”, the speaker will explore how the film creatively presents traditional Korean religious culture. Participants can expect to gain a deeper understanding of Korean culture through this activity, particularly regarding the concepts of inheritance, creativity, and breakthrough.
Day 8 – Tuesday, 25 March 2025
Drama Performance : Our Jing Ke
Time: 4:00pm-6:00pm
Venue: 4/F, College Hall, M Building, HSUHK

Women de jingke (我們的荊軻), written by Mo Yan (Nobel Prize Laureate of literature in 2012), is inspired by the Chinese classical text Shiji 《史記》’s story “Jing Ke Assassinating King Qin”(荊軻刺秦王), but it interprets this famous story under a contemporary perspective. In the script, Mo Yan abandons describing once again the political struggle featured in Shiji, he rather concentrates on the eagerness of seeking fame and quick success of the main characters in the story.
