Entrance Scholarship for BSocSc-AS Year 1 Local Students

1. Objective

To recognize local students, newly admitted to the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Asian Studies (BSocSc-AS) programme starting from the academic year 2026/27, who have a satisfied proficiency level in Japanese / Korean, or stipulated criteria listed in the following paragraphs.

2. Name of the Scholarship

3. Provision of the Scholarship

• There shall be a maximum of two scholarships of HK$30,000 each and six of HK$15,000 each in an academic year.
• The scholarship shall be paid in two instalments as follows:

 

For scholarships of HK$30,000:
– HK$20,000, first instalment in the first year of study; and
– HK$10,000, last instalment in the second year of study.
For scholarships of HK$15,000:
– HK$10,000, first instalment in the first year of study; and
– HK$5,000, last instalment in the second year of study.

 

• The last instalment of the scholarship is contingent upon the student achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in the first year of study. Failing to meet the GPA requirement for the first year of study will disqualify the student from receiving the last instalment of the scholarship.
• The scholarship shall be disbursed in Semester 2 upon students’ settlement of all tuition fees for the academic year. Recipient must be an active student by the time of scholarship disbursement.

4. Eligibility & Criteria

a. Only local students admitted to the BSocSc-AS programme in Semester 1 with current year admission examination results are eligible.
b. Students should have attained 332A2 in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, or equivalent in the current year of admission.
c. Achieved a minimum HKDSE Best 5 score of 15 or above (or equivalent);
d. Academic results of combined HKDSE certificates will not be considered;
e. Students will be considered for any entrance scholarship once during their study at the University; any student who is transferred/re-admitted to the same or another programme for whatever reasons, s/he will not be considered for any entrance scholarship.
f. Special cases will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Programme Committee of the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Asian Studies.
g. In addition to the criteria a to d listed above, applicants shall also meet the criteria in any one of the three categories listed below:

 

Category A (Asian Language Excellence)

Applicants shall have attained one of the following levels of proficiency:
• Level 1 or above in Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK); or.
• N5 or above in Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

Category B (Diversity and Inclusion)

Applicants who are admitted into the BSocSc-AS programme with an exemption from taking Chinese subject in HKDSE shall provide reference letter(s) from secondary school teachers and attend an interview.

Category C (Asian Cultural Experience)

Applicants shall submit a portfolio outlining their outbound learning experience in Asia, and/or activities related to Asian Culture, and attend an interview.

 

h. Recipients must fulfill the requirements for Category A, B, or C above and have attained 332A2 in the HKDSE (or equivalent). A scholarship of HK$30,000 will be granted to those with an HKDSE score of 18 or above, while those with a score of 15-17 will receive HK$15,000.

5. Application/ Nomination Procedure

• Eligible students will be selected and nominated by the Programme Committee of the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Asian Studies for endorsement by the Department Head and the School Dean, and approval by the University’s Scholarship and Financial Assistance Committee.
• Applicants should make themselves aware of the Guiding Principles for Scholarship/ Award and Financial Assistance Schemes as stipulated by the Scholarship and Financial Assistance Committee.

6. Conditions of Scholarship

• Distribution of the scholarship is subject to availability of fund.
• Recipients of the scholarship are required to attend functions related to the scholarship organized by the Donor and/or the HSUHK.
• Recipients shall abide by any other conditions laid down by the HSUHK.
• Recipient of scholarship must be an active student by the time of scholarship application, selection and disbursement. Any student who is withdrawn from/deregistered with the HSUHK/has his/her student status deactivated, even if having been in good academic standing in the previous academic year, will not be considered.
• The HSUHK reserves the right to withhold disbursement or to request the recipient to reimburse the scholarship if the recipient’s conduct is deemed unsatisfactory or he/she is not an active student or has outstanding fees or payments.
