Master of Social Sciences in Public Policy and Risk Governance
Looking back to my incredible journey at HSU, I am filled with gratitude for the knowledge and friendships I gained. Every drop of sweat has contributed to my academic and personal development.
As I conclude my study in the Public Policy and Risk Governance programme, I am overwhelmed with appreciation to my generous professors and great peers. The engaging discussions, thought-provoking lectures and collaborative projects deepened my understanding of complex social issues. I am particularly grateful for the hands-on experiences in our research projects that trained our critical thinking about policy making and its impact on communities, some which I can carry into my future career development.
While graduation means the end of one chapter, it also opens the door to new opportunities. Thank you everyone who has been part of my incredible journey!

Master of Arts in Theatre Studies
Among thousands of choices, I always choose to do what I think it is worth. I may do it beautifully, or I may not do it well, but it doesn’t matter. The important thing is that I have worked hard for it. It is difficult for us to do everything well, so that life does not leave any regrets: Do our best, enjoy the process, accept the result. In the future, whenever I see the world and see sentient beings, I find that the world I see is one with my inner courage and confidence. When I see the four seasons and the clouds, I find that the beauty I see is the seemingly plain life and mood.
A year of study in the MA in Theatre Studies enlightened me many things about life.

During the MA-ELTA programme, I had the privilege of participating in an international academic conference co-hosted by the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong and Tung Wah College. As a student representative, I not only chaired several conference sessions but also presented my own academic paper. I deeply appreciate the diverse academic platforms the university provides, such as this academic conference, to showcase and share my research. I am extremely grateful to the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong for offering me this international stage. Presenting my work at such a conference not only enhanced my academic skills but also allowed me to benefit greatly from the global academic environment. It remains one of the most remarkable memories of my university life.
Throughout my studies, I have come to deeply appreciate the unique structure of the MA-ELTA programme. The curriculum not only provides a solid theoretical foundation but also offers valuable hands-on experience through group microteaching sessions. In these sessions, we are divided into small groups to collaboratively simulate real-life teaching scenarios, which allows us to integrate theoretical knowledge with practice.
I particularly value this approach because it made me realise that teaching is not just about mastering content but also about adapting to dynamic classroom environments. The professors play a crucial role in this process by guiding us through the theoretical aspects while offering constructive feedback during the microteaching sessions, helping us identify areas for improvement and grow as future educators.

The teachers’ profound knowledge and attentive guidance encouraged students to challenge themselves and improve their personal skills while mastering research methods.
The valuable qualities of honesty, modesty, helpfulness, rigor, and independent thinking demonstrated by teachers and classmates are going to benefit me for a lifetime.

The four-year university journey passed quickly and was over in the blink of an eye. The most memorable experience was joining the overseas exchange program. Living in another country with students from different nations for a few months was a precious experience! Through this opportunity , I gained an international mindset and enhanced my language skills. Besides, living abroad deepened my understanding of that nation and provided me with a new perspective on Hong Kong, allowing me to observe my birthplace from a different angle. Most importantly, I made friends from all over the world; a friendship that transcends geographical boundaries is truly amazing. While studying is important, participating in various activities can make your university life incredible!

If life is a journey, then HSUHK is a crucial staging post for me.
Being a BA-CHI student at HSUHK has been the most unforgettable experience for me and brought gracious memories that is worth recalling all my life. In these four years, I had cultivated myself in various areas including academic knowledge, interpersonal skills, and research tactics. Apart from studying major courses on campus and joining the outbound exchange programme (Tsinghua University in Beijing), where I had pursued studies of classical Chinese language and literature, I also became a student helper in the Department of Chinese and a member of the Catalogue team in the University Library at HSUHK. I had gained valuable experience serving on campus and doing academic research, which effectively enhanced my professional knowledge.
I wholeheartedly appreciate all professors, teachers, and staff not only in the Department of Chinese but also within the HSUHK community, especially Professor CHEUNG Kwong Yue (CHI), Dr TAN Mei Ah (CHI), Dr AU Yik Sau (CHI), Ms KO Wai (CHI), Ms KWOK Kam Fung (Library), Ms HO Kwan Hung (Library) and Ms LAW Siu Yau (Library) since they had imparted their knowledge and provided me with learning, internship, and work opportunities. I was able to better equip myself before graduation and got well prepared to face the challenges ahead.

The 4-year Bachelor Programme in Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) had been a fruitful journey for me. With a variety of modules that offer me both theoretical and practical knowledge, I was being inspired to join the CCI in the future and make contributions for the society. During my study, I enjoyed writing my Capstone Project to explore issues related to the CCI. Along with learning multiple research methods and receiving the guidance from my supervisor, I also acquired the techniques for forming arguments and structuring the research, as well as presenting my findings to academic staff and fellow students. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the academic and administrative staff who have supported my learning in the Programme, and I believe our class of 2024 will shine in the field they pursue.

Graduation signifies not just an end but a celebration of the unforgettable journey we’ve shared in the AD program. From late-night creativity in the studio to inspiring critiques in class, each moment has shaped us profoundly. I fondly recall our first day, filled with excitement and uncertainty, and how we quickly transformed into a close-knit family. The laughter during group projects and the unwavering support during our capstone thesis period forged bonds that will last a lifetime. I am immensely grateful for the professors who ignited our passion and the friends who stood by us through challenges. These cherished memories—our triumphs, struggles, and shared experiences—will forever hold a special place in my heart. As we step into new adventures, let us carry forward the lessons learned, and the friendships formed. Here’s to the remarkable journey we’ve experienced together! Let’s cheer to our youth!

What comes to your mind when you think of your HSU life? Having Grilled Chicken Combo at “A cafe”, discussing group projects in group discussion room and having fruitful lessons are the first three things that came to my mind. I am always thankful that we can enjoy a fruitful and diverse learning experience in our CCI programme. Apart from attending lectures, internship, field trips and public lectures equipped me with knowledge and skills to my future work or studies in the art, culture, and creative fields. One of the memorable experiences would be my internship in Tai Kwun, which is arranged by the CCI programme. Internship is a wonderful opportunity for me to gain hands-on working experience, ranging from conducting research for exhibition, assisting the curator to arrange a display at the Artists’ Book Library, helping artists to prepare props and set-up for opening performances. I am sincerely grateful that these explorations are done with the company of my dearest friends, lecturers and professors. They make our journeys much more interesting and never alone.

Throughout these four years, the Department of Chinese has nurtured me in various aspects. I have benefited not only from academic and practical courses, but also from a wealth of academic talks, extracurricular activities, and other learning resources. The most notable of all was the exchange opportunity to Tsinghua University, where I gained a broader and a more inclusive perspective, to the point that it further stimulated my interest in contemporary literature and women’s texts. I am grateful for all the patience, guidance, and support that I have received from my wonderful professors in my study and life. I am proud to say that the countless precious knowledge and experience I have acquired from the BA-CHI programme and from the University have equipped me with the strength and potential to achieve a long-term growth in my academic research and my future career. I’m thrilled to be a Social Sciences graduate in Asian Studies Major. I have gained in-depth insights of diverse cultures in Asian societies. The past four years have also been a remarkable journey of self-exploration. Two significant opportunities deeply impacted my development: the Asian Studies Student Research Forum and the Exchange Buddy Program. The Forum not only enhanced my research skills but also allowed me to engage in qualitative research under the close guidance of inspiring professors. This experience was transformative, equipping me with valuable skills for the future. The Exchange Buddy Program enabled me to have interactions with students from the Mainland, Europe, and other parts of Asia, exposing me to many new cultures. This multicultural and international exposure offered me invaluable insights into different ways of living and fostering global friendships and broadened my perspective.

WEN Zhaoxu
Master of Arts in Theatre Studies
Time flies, one year of study life is over. In addition to learning in the school classroom, for example, we visited the stage in the City Hall to see the theatre’s operating system… Even more fortunate is that we had the opportunity to go to Norway and Sweden with our professor to exchange and experience the world; going to University of Oslo and experience the shock of technology restoring a theatre that has become a thing of the past…
After a year of studying at Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, I realise that this Master’s degree would never be the end of my exploration of theatre and humanism. While science seeks the limits of material truth, the humanities and the arts explore the limits of human spiritual needs, love and hate, life and death… Human beings spend their lives searching for a balance between rationality and sensibility. Life is closely linked to the humanities and the arts, and without them mankind would be like a cyborg robot. In the post-industrial era of life dominated by machines, we are more aware that human beings are not precision measuring instruments. We need to voice our opinions, to have love and freedom, and art becomes the carrier of emotions, while words become the outlets of life, and drama amplifies the perception of life. Before AI replaces humans, we need to remember to learn how to love and feel pain, that’s the biggest difference between us and AI, that’s the real surge of emotion and free will that countless algorithms can’t replicate even in their millions. To me, graduation with a Theatre Studies degree is not a full stop or a comma; it is a semicolon in this period of study and a new beginning. I would like to thank the school and all the professors for showing me the beauty of theatre arts and literature in this short year, and I wish I can see you again in the vast ocean of studies.

TAN Yueting
Master of Arts in Theatre Studies
The famous German dramatist Bertolt Brecht once said, ‘All art forms are in the service of the greatest of all arts: the art of living.’
Theater is not only a form of entertainment; it is a guide that teaches ethics. It provides a shared space for both actors and the audience. The major forms of theater, such as epic theater, theater of the absurd, and realism, represent different approaches to life. These works hold up a mirror to our own reality.
The postgraduate class of theater studies at HSU is filled with joy. In addition to attending seminars, we are invited to practice reading from a drama script or play a role, whether we are professional actors or amateurs. To learn, we not only need to listen but also have some fun.
My graduate studies have helped me sharpen my research skills and expand my horizons. Whenever we are presented with challenging but thought-provoking questions, we discover new insights. I was taught that the key to being a good graduate student is to ask more questions rather than providing answers. Even if I cannot find all the answers today, I should not give up so easily. Our professors may be demanding, but I understand that they want to motivate us to make the most out of our degree.

Throughout the 4 years studying in HSUHK, I have built up a strong foundation in Chinese literature, linguistics and phonetics. The knowledge I have acquired in the University does assist me in teaching, allowing me to make judgement and focus on the topics that suit the needs of my students. I can also use my own experience as reference, in order to spot the weaknesses of students’ Chinese learning. Besides, being a teacher not only means I teach students in class, but also handle documents after lessons. I am glad that I have got experience in operational issues and administrative work when I was studying in HSUHK. I am always ready when I am now involved in similar duties.
