Institute for Chinese Language and Culture (ICLC) aims at cultivating students’ spirit of pursuing integrity alongside knowledge, as well as encouraging intellectual and cultural exchange. The ICLC consists of three centres:
1. The Putonghua Education and Assessment Centre: The Centre administers the National Putonghua Proficiency Test (PSC) in collaboration with the State Language and Writing Commission. It also helps students enhance their Putonghua abilities to meet the internationally recognized standard and prepares them for taking the PSC to fulfill the graduation requirement;
2. The Centre for Business Ethics and Culture: The Centre organizes the Seminar Series by renowned scholars and celebrities, international academic conferences, and various kinds of cultural activities to cultivate students’ interest in Chinese culture; and
3. The Chinese Language Centre: The Centre provides various multi-media resources and learning support to help students improve their Chinese proficiency.
The ELC provides a state-of-the-art English language learning environment for students. It offers language learning support such as consultation, English language workshops and cultural literacy activities, as well as multimedia self-access materials. Additional activities include singing contests, reading groups, dramatic duologue competitions, movie nights, and seminars by guest speakers. Each of these opportunities allows students to brush up on their language proficiency and to broaden their cultural horizons.
Centre for Greater China Studies (CGCS) aims to enhance interdisciplinary research that highlights the rise of China and its impact on the rest of the world. The CGCS has two major objectives. First, it serves as a research platform to formulate and promote Greater China studies at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK). Its second objective is to facilitate academic exchange and cooperation between local and international scholars. The CGCS focuses on four key areas:
• To facilitate research on the Belt and Road initiative and the Greater Bay Area Development.
• To encourage research on interactions between China and the rest of the world and accompanying problems that may occur.
• To set up a “Greater China Network” website which would be used to engage in various types of academic activities and online publication.
The Centre for Asian Languages and Cultures is the first of its kind among all higher education institutions in Hong Kong. It endeavours to encourage young people to appreciate Asian languages and cultures, with a vision to equip students with the knowledge and language skills required for capturing the development opportunities in the Belt and Road region. The Centre also works towards enhancing students’ proficiency in Asian languages and arousing their interest in Asian cultures.
