Public Lecture: “Making Theatre in the Chinese-Speaking World 1984-2024” by Dr Stan Lai

On 2 December 2024, the School of Humanities and Social Science was honoured to invite Dr Stan Lai, a renowned Taiwanese theatre director, to deliver a lecture titled “Making Theatre in the Chinese-Speaking World 1984-2024“. The event attracted around 120 attendees, including staff members, students, and external audience.


During the lecture, Dr Lai provided an in-depth overview of the development of contemporary Chinese theatre from 1984 to 2024. He also shared personal experiences about his bicultural upbringing and move from Washington to Taiwan. By recounting his cultural shock, Dr Lai explained how these experiences shaped his theatrical approach.


The lecture received enthusiastic feedback. Participants expressed their inspiration and appreciation for Dr Lai’s powerful demonstration of how the arts connect diverse cultures and explore complex social issues.


This event significantly enriched our participant’s understanding of Chinese theatrical arts and highlighted our School’s commitment to promoting cultural and academic exchanges.
